A tasty afternoon full of stories, smiles and community spirit
At Spring Lane Care Home in Muswell Hill, North London, residents recently came together to celebrate National Sandwich Day with a fun, educational and very tasty activity that brought everyone chatting, laughing and reminiscing.
From discovering the surprising origins of the humble sandwich to sampling a variety of classic fillings, it was truly a case of the best thing since sliced bread.

đ Discovering the story behind the sandwich
Residents learned how the sandwich is believed to have been invented by John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, an English aristocrat who reportedly wanted a meal he could eat without leaving the card table.
We also explored how sandwiches appear in different cultures, including the Passover Matzo sandwich in Jewish tradition, sparking lovely conversations about family memories, faith, and food from years gone by.
đ„Ș Taste testing favourites at Spring Lane Care Home, East Finchley

Once the history lesson was over, it was time for the best bit⊠the tasting.
Our residents enjoyed a delicious selection of fillings on both white and brown bread, including:
- đđ„ Tuna & cucumber
- đ§đ
Cheese & tomato

Mitzvah Day is always a highlight in our North London community, and this yearâs celebration at Spring Grove Care Home was filled with joy, creativity and plenty of meaningful moments. Residents, volunteers and guests came together to take part in uplifting activities that truly embodied the spirit of giving back.

A Warm Community Gathering in North London
The home was full of smiles from the moment our special guests arrived. We were delighted to welcome Mitzvah Day founder Laura Marks CBE, along with her daughter Sally Patterson and Lauraâs husband Dan, whose wonderful musical performance brought the room to life. Guitar-led singalongs had residents clapping, dancing and sharing memories.
Mitzvah Day creates a sense of connection, and it was lovely to see residents chatting with volunteers and staff, enjoying the lively atmosphere and the shared sense of purpose.
Biscuit Baking for a Cause

One of the dayâs most loved activities was our biscuit-making session. Residents rolled dough, pressed cookie cutters into shapes, and helped prepare trays of treats that will be sent to JW3 London and distributed to local homeless shelters.
It was a lovely way to bring people together. The kitchen filled with conversation and laughter as residents teamed up with volunteers to create something that would bring comfort to others in the community.
In the days leading up to Mitzvah Day, our Spring Grove family also collected an amazing selection of items for the JW3 foodbank. We are so grateful to everyone who donated. Your kindness truly makes a difference.
Music, Movement and Meaningful Moments
As the guitars played, many residents couldnât resist getting up for a dance. Staff and volunteers joined in, helping create a warm, family-like atmosphere. These small moments of connection are at the heart of life at Spring Grove, and Mitzvah Day gave us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate them.

A Celebration of Community and Care
Mitzvah Day at Spring Grove Care Home was more than an activity; it was a reminder of what makes our North London community so special. The day was filled with kindness, togetherness and shared purpose â values that sit right at the heart of Springdeneâs approach to care.
We want to say a heartfelt thank you to Laura, Sally, Dan, and everyone who joined us, donated items or supported the day. Your contribution helps make Spring Grove a vibrant and welcoming home.

On July 14th, residents at both Spring Lane and Spring Grove care homes enjoyed a vibrant celebration of Bastille Day – a nod to French culture that brought smiles, laughter and a lovely sense of community. With French flags fluttering, tables were set with a delicious selection of cheeses and a splash of red wine to mark the occasion in true Parisian style.
Bastille Day, or La FĂȘte Nationale, is celebrated every 14 July and commemorates a turning point in the French Revolution. For our residents, it was a chance to enjoy good food and drink, and connect with staff and fellow residents in a fun, themed afternoon.

Springdene care homes – Spring Lane in Muswell Hill, Spring Grove in Hampstead and Springview in Enfield – regularly host cultural days like this, helping residents stay active, socially engaged and mentally stimulated. Our events are designed to spark joy and conversation, encouraging everyone to join in while promoting wellbeing through shared experiences.
Whether itâs an afternoon of music, seasonal celebrations, or simply trying something new, the team at Springdene always aims to go the extra mile for our residents.

THE LEAVES are turning golden and, as we write this, thereâs the rich fragrance of autumn in the air. And what a lovely Indian summer we have had, where our residents have delighted in getting outside to savour the late sunshine and the sensuousness of the season.
And itâs been especially memorable since Springviewâs gardens, nurtured by green-fingered director, Stacey-Louise Balcombe, have triumphed in the annual Enfield in Bloom competition, winning both a gold and silver award. In the view of the judges, the floral displays have brought great pleasure to our little corner of Enfield. Stacey-Louise is (left) in the picture with Kathy Dunn, home administrator.
Now the clocks have gone back and the nights are drawing in, our activities are centred in the cosy interiors of our homes. Spring Grove had a delightful day of poetry, shared with the primary age pupils of Devonshire House School in Hampstead, in which young and old read and wrote poetry together. âIt was such a touching occasion,â observed their teacher.
Halloween was a highlight, with some highly decorative and spooky pumpkins carved across the homes. Folk are looking forward to Guy Fawkes Day at the weekend. Soon it will be Christmas, which is always magical in our homes, and the activities teams canât wait to get folk involved in putting up the decorations.
A veritable repast of Christmas fayre will be prepared under the supervision of Mark Gates, our new group catering manager. We are delighted to welcome Mark , who will be overseeing the catering services across our three homes henceforth.
Mark will be collaborating closely with catering director Stacey-Louise Balcombe, as he assumes full responsibility for our kitchens. Mark made the move from Sunderland to London a decade ago and, along with his impressive culinary skills, he brings with him a charming cava-poo named Bubbles, who enjoys a life of luxury.
Mark’s career has primarily been dedicated to the care home industry. In addition to his extensive background in care homes, Mark has also contributed his culinary expertise to various other settings, including restaurants, sports venues, and hospitals.
Mark’s dedication to serving high-quality food in the care home sector is truly commendable. With his vast experience and knowledge, he is eager to share best practices he has gathered throughout the years to help improve the dining experience for our residents.
A big welcome to Mark, but sadly we have experienced a great loss from our Springdene family in the demise, aged 93, of Pat Arrowsmith. One of our âcelebrityâ residents, Pat was a giant of the peace movement, having been a joint founder of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. This what the Guardian said in her obituary:
âBest known for her role in organising the first Aldermaston march against nuclear weapons, at Easter 1958, she put her life and liberty on the line many times. She was imprisoned a dozen times and twice named a prisoner of conscience of the year by Amnesty International.âÂ
RIP, Pat â glad you found tranquillity in your final years at Spring Lane
Pat was not the only one of our eminent residents. Alive and well are Robin Young, the distinguished Times, and Spectator journalist, who resides at Spring Grove. Jean Soames, also at Spring Grove, was the first woman picture editor of the Sun. Frank Herrmann, one of the most outstanding photojournalists of the 20th century is ensconced at Spring Lane.
Professor Patricia Jacobs, the world-famous geneticist thrives at Spring Grove, as does Rachel Kidd the distinguished artist and daughter of eminent artists Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson.
You donât have to be famous to be celebrated at Springdene. Â Dorothy Quill at Spring Lane had a lovely 103rd birthday the other day, while her namesake Dorothy Adams was 100. Â Happy Birthday, both Dorothies: you are our stars!
One further change, we are delighted to announce that Lori Vela, our hard-working Spring Lane manager is having a baby and will shortly be off for maternity leave. Â We know that all our residents will be wishing Lori every joy and we look forward to seeing her back with her new charge!
In the meantime, we continue to receive praise and accolades from those who use our services. Â Weâd like to share this recent example with you from a daughter about her mother:
âThe environment at Spring Grove is gentle and soothing but with a range of activities that all residents can join in with. Â Recent renovation works earlier this spring (2023) have meant the addition of a lovely terrace overlooked by trees and plants where residents can relax outside, with friends or family. Â Staff have been particularly helpful in facilitating phone calls, and keeping us well-informed about any health updates or concerns. Â Thank you.â
Finally, with Christmas approaching, we know our families and residents are usually very generous about offering a gift to the staff. Â Just to remind you about our policy; Any gifts must be offered to the home manager on behalf of the staff. Â Individuals or teams cannot accept gifts, but we place all gifts into a raffle for the benefit of all the staff.
Compliments (in advance) of the season!
