Mabuhay! Residents, staff and visitors at Springdene Care Homes came together for a colourful celebration of Philippines Independence Day, sharing food, music, dance and stories while learning more about Filipino culture and heritage.
The celebrations were made particularly special by our Filipino colleagues, who had the opportunity to share some of their own traditions with the people they care for and work alongside. With Philippine flags decorating the homes, traditional dress, dancing and plenty of delicious food, it was a wonderful day of learning, laughter and togetherness.
Learning About Philippines Independence Day
Celebrated each year on 12 June, Philippines Independence Day commemorates the country’s declaration of independence from Spain in 1898.
At Springdene, the occasion provided an opportunity to learn more about the Philippines and why Independence Day holds such significance for Filipino people around the world.
Residents enjoyed presentations about the country and its history, giving everyone plenty to talk about and ask questions about. The homes were decorated for the occasion too, with the distinctive blue, red, white and yellow of the Philippine flag providing a colourful backdrop to the celebrations.
Sharing Filipino Culture Through Music and Dance
One of the highlights of the day was a series of performances by members of the Springdene team.
Staff dressed in beautiful traditional Filipino clothing and performed dances for residents and visitors. There was a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, with residents watching from the comfort of the lounges as their familiar carers and other members of the team took centre stage.
For residents, events like this offer far more than entertainment. Music, movement and familiar rhythms can encourage conversation and engagement, while watching people they know perform brings a particularly personal element to the occasion.
They also give residents an opportunity to discover something new. Learning about different countries, customs and traditions helps keep life varied and interesting, with conversations often continuing long after an activity itself has finished.

Food, Friendship and a Chance to Share
Of course, no celebration would be complete without food.
Our teams prepared a selection of authentic Filipino dishes for residents and visitors to enjoy, turning the occasion into a real feast as well as a cultural celebration.
Sharing food has a lovely way of bringing people together. Sitting around a table, trying something different and talking about favourite dishes can prompt all sorts of conversations, from holidays and family traditions to recipes remembered from childhood.
It was also an opportunity for our Filipino colleagues to share another part of their heritage with the wider Springdene community.

Celebrating the People Who Make Up Our Springdene Community
Springdene Care Homes is home to people from many different backgrounds, and the same is true of our staff teams.
Celebrating occasions such as Philippines Independence Day gives us the chance to recognise that diversity and learn more about the cultures and traditions that are important to the people around us.
For our Filipino colleagues, this was an opportunity to proudly share part of their heritage. For residents, relatives and fellow members of staff, it was a chance to join in, ask questions and enjoy something a little different together.
Those shared experiences are an important part of creating a genuine sense of community within a care home. Residents get to know the people supporting them as individuals, while staff have opportunities to bring their own personalities, interests and backgrounds into daily life.

Meaningful Activities and Person-Centred Care
Activities across Springdene are about much more than filling a calendar.
A varied programme gives residents opportunities to socialise, enjoy familiar interests and discover new ones. Cultural celebrations can be particularly valuable because they naturally combine several different experiences, including music, food, conversation, visual displays and storytelling.
That variety means people can take part in the way that suits them. Some residents may enjoy watching a lively dance performance, while others are happiest chatting over food, listening to a presentation or simply enjoying the atmosphere around them.
This approach is part of the person-centred care provided across Spring Lane Care Home, Spring Grove Care Home and Springview Care Home. Activities are designed to support social and emotional wellbeing while helping residents remain connected with the people and wider world around them.
For families considering residential, respite or dementia care in North London, these everyday experiences can also offer an important glimpse into what life in a care home is really like. Care matters enormously, but so do friendship, conversation, curiosity, laughter and having something enjoyable to look forward to.

The latest edition of The Daffodil brings together some of the memorable moments shared across Springdene Care Homes over recent months. From festive celebrations and cultural events to creative workshops, fundraising activities and special performances, the newsletter captures the warmth, friendship and person-centred care that make our homes such vibrant places to live.
Across Spring Lane Care Home, Spring Grove Care Home and Springview Care Home, residents, families and staff have enjoyed opportunities to laugh together, learn new skills, celebrate different cultures and create lasting memories. Here are just a few of the highlights from our Summer 2026 edition of The Daffodil.
Bringing joy through shared experiences
One of the biggest highlights of the past few months was welcoming Tickled Pink Productions to all three homes. Their lively pantomime performances brought laughter, music and plenty of audience participation, with residents, relatives and staff all joining in the fun.
These shared experiences create far more than an afternoon’s entertainment. Familiar songs, storytelling and live performances often spark conversation, encourage participation and provide opportunities for residents to enjoy meaningful moments together.
Throughout the year, residents have also enjoyed musical performances from Crescendo School of Music and Art, demonstrating once again how music has a wonderful way of bringing generations together.

Creativity that brings people together
Creative activities continue to play an important role across Springdene Care Homes.
Working alongside our Artist in Residence, Odile, residents have explored new techniques including lino printing and creating beautiful resin coasters using flowers carefully dried from our own gardens. Every piece has been completely unique, giving residents the opportunity to express themselves while learning new skills in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
Perhaps most rewarding has been seeing residents who may previously have been hesitant to join activities becoming increasingly involved. Creative sessions often encourage conversation, confidence and new friendships, helping residents feel part of the community around them.

Celebrating cultures, stories and traditions
At Springdene, celebrating different cultures and traditions is an important part of life throughout the year.
Chinese New Year brought vibrant lion and dragon dances, martial arts demonstrations and delicious themed meals prepared by our catering teams. For many residents, it was an opportunity to experience something completely new while sharing stories and learning together.
Global Intergenerational Week offered another memorable experience, with residents taking part in a storytelling project based around Bob Dylan’s Man Gave Names To All The Animals. Each resident brought their own personality to the reading, creating a wonderful video celebrating shared stories across generations.
These occasions remind us that meaningful activities don’t need to be complicated. They simply need to bring people together.

Supporting our local community
Community has always been at the heart of Springdene Care Homes.
This year we’ve been proud to support charities including North London Hospice and RNLI Tower Bridge through fundraising events that brought together residents, families, staff and visitors.
Our Christmas Festival raised an incredible £1,269 for North London Hospice, helping to begin what we hope will become a long and valued partnership.
Springview’s ever-popular Fish & Chips Quiz Supper also proved another great success, raising £780 for RNLI Tower Bridge while providing an evening full of laughter, teamwork and friendly competition.
These events reflect the close relationships between our homes and the communities around Enfield, Muswell Hill and Hampstead.

Investing in our homes for the future
Alongside memorable events and activities, we’ve continued investing in our homes to ensure residents enjoy comfortable, welcoming surroundings both now and in the future.
Recent improvements include refurbished bedrooms, modern communal areas and exciting new spaces at Springview, including a library and cinema room designed to encourage relaxation, social interaction and shared experiences.
Springview has also recently installed solar panels as part of our long-term commitment to sustainability, helping us reduce environmental impact while supporting the future of our family-run care homes.
Thanking the people who make Springdene special
None of these moments would be possible without our dedicated teams.
Our annual Employee Appreciation Day was a chance to celebrate the compassion, professionalism and kindness shown by staff across Spring Lane Care Home, Spring Grove Care Home and Springview Care Home every single day.
Families often tell us it’s the warmth of our people that makes Springdene feel different, and we’re incredibly proud of the caring culture our teams create together.

Looking Back on Recent Highlights
From creative workshops and cultural celebrations to fundraising, music and investment in our homes, the past few months have perfectly reflected what life at Springdene Care Homes is all about.
Every event, activity and improvement has been centred around helping residents continue enjoying meaningful experiences, building friendships and feeling part of a caring community.
These are just some of the stories featured in the Summer 2026 edition of The Daffodil, reflecting the many memorable moments, achievements and experiences shared across Springdene Care Homes over recent months. If you’d like to discover even more about life across our homes, we invite you to read the full newsletter.
If you’re considering residential care, dementia care or respite care for someone you love, we’d also be delighted to welcome you for a visit and show you what makes Springdene Care Homes such a special place to call home.

Some of life’s happiest memories are sparked by the simplest things. A familiar taste, a favourite drink or an old story shared with friends can open the door to conversations that might otherwise never happen. That was exactly what residents experienced during our World Cider Day celebration at Springdene Care Homes, where an afternoon of tasting, storytelling and shared memories brought smiles, laughter and meaningful connections.
That was exactly the spirit behind our recent World Cider Day celebrations across Springdene Care Homes. Residents enjoyed an engaging afternoon exploring Britain’s rich cider heritage through stories, tasting sessions and lively conversation, creating an experience that celebrated far more than cider itself.
Thanks to the generous support of Heineken UK and renowned drinks writer, cider educator and broadcaster Jane Peyton, residents were treated to a memorable event filled with learning, laughter and reminiscence.
More Than a Tasting Session
World Cider Day gave residents the opportunity to sample a selection of traditional and alcohol-free ciders, including Inch’s Medium Apple Cider, Inch’s 0.0% Alcohol-Free Cider, Strongbow Original and Old Mout Berries & Cherries.
However, the afternoon was never simply about tasting different drinks.
Jane Peyton guided everyone through the fascinating history of cider making, Britain’s orchard traditions and how cider has evolved through the centuries. Her relaxed, friendly approach encouraged residents to ask questions, compare flavours and share their own memories.
Many conversations quickly turned into stories of family gatherings, country pubs, harvest festivals, holidays and celebrations from decades past. These personal memories helped create meaningful conversations between residents, team members and visitors.
Why Reminiscence Matters
For many older people, sensory experiences can unlock memories that may otherwise remain hidden.
The taste of a familiar drink, the smell of apples or hearing stories about traditional British customs can encourage people to remember important moments from earlier in life.
Reminiscence activities are widely recognised as supporting emotional wellbeing by encouraging conversation, strengthening identity and promoting social interaction. While everyone’s experiences are different, activities centred around familiar sights, sounds and tastes often help residents feel more connected with one another and with their own personal histories.
At Springdene, these meaningful moments form an important part of our person-centred approach to care.
Creating Opportunities for Conversation
One of the highlights of the afternoon wasn’t the cider itself.
It was the conversations.
Residents chatted about favourite drinks, local pubs, homemade cider, family traditions and orchard visits. Some discovered shared memories they never knew they had, while others simply enjoyed listening to different life stories.
These natural conversations help friendships flourish and create a genuine sense of community throughout our homes.
Simple shared experiences often become some of the most memorable.
Activities That Reflect Individual Interests
Every resident at Springdene has different interests, hobbies and life experiences.
That is why our activities programme includes such a wide variety of experiences throughout the year, from music and arts to gardening, animal visits, celebrations and educational talks.
World Cider Day was another opportunity to offer something a little different while recognising the diverse backgrounds and interests of the people who live with us.
Providing choice is an important part of person-centred care, allowing residents to take part in activities that feel meaningful to them.
Bringing the Community Into Our Homes
Events like this also strengthen the connections between our care homes and the wider community.
We are incredibly grateful to Heineken UK for generously donating the drinks and to Jane Peyton for sharing her knowledge, enthusiasm and warmth throughout the afternoon. Their support helped create an engaging experience that residents will remember for a long time.
Community partnerships like these bring fresh experiences into our homes while helping residents continue enjoying lifelong interests and discovering something new.
Life at Springdene Care Homes
Across Spring Grove Care Home in Hampstead, Spring Lane Care Home in Muswell Hill and Springview Care Home in Enfield, our focus is always on helping residents enjoy fulfilling, meaningful lives.
Whether it’s a themed celebration, music performance, creative workshop or educational event like World Cider Day, every activity is designed to encourage conversation, build confidence and support emotional wellbeing.
It’s these everyday moments of laughter, friendship and shared experiences that help make Springdene feel like home.
World Cider Day reminded us that meaningful activities don’t have to be complicated.
Sometimes all it takes is a familiar flavour, an interesting story and the opportunity to spend time together.
We would like to thank Jane Peyton and Heineken UK once again for helping create such a memorable afternoon for our residents.
If you would like to learn more about life at Springdene Care Homes or arrange a visit to one of our homes in North London, we’d be delighted to welcome you and your family.

There is something truly special about the connection between people and animals.
Residents across all three Springdene Care Homes recently welcomed the wonderful team from Megan’s Petting Paradise, enjoying a memorable afternoon spent meeting rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, a bearded dragon and even a friendly corn snake.
The visit brought smiles, laughter and plenty of conversation to our homes in North London and Enfield, creating meaningful moments that residents, families and staff will remember for a long time.
Bringing Animal Encounters to Every Springdene Home
Megan’s Petting Paradise visited all three Springdene Care Homes:
Residents were able to enjoy an interactive experience with a wonderful variety of friendly animals. While some immediately wanted to cuddle the rabbits and guinea pigs, others were fascinated by the reptiles and enjoyed learning more about them from Megan and her team.
These shared experiences naturally encouraged conversation between residents, relatives and staff, creating opportunities for reminiscence and new friendships.
Supporting Wellbeing Through Animal Experiences
Animal-assisted activities can offer many benefits for older people, particularly those living with dementia.
Interacting with animals has been shown to help reduce anxiety, encourage communication and promote relaxation. Familiar pets often bring back treasured memories, while unusual animals spark curiosity and encourage residents to try something completely new.
Whether cuddling a gentle rabbit, stroking a guinea pig, admiring the bearded dragon or even bravely holding the corn snake, every interaction encouraged confidence, conversation and smiles. It was wonderful to see residents embracing new experiences while others shared happy stories about pets they had loved throughout their lives.
At Springdene, creating these meaningful moments is an important part of our person-centred approach to care.
Every Resident Enjoys Activities in Their Own Way
One of the things that made the visit so special was seeing each resident engage in a way that suited them.
Some happily cuddled the rabbits, while others preferred gently stroking them from the comfort of their chair. A number of residents surprised themselves by confidently holding the corn snake, while others simply enjoyed watching the animals and chatting with friends about the experience.
There was no pressure to participate. Everyone was encouraged to enjoy the afternoon in whatever way felt right for them, helping create a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere throughout all three homes.
These personalised experiences reflect Springdene’s commitment to providing activities that support physical, emotional and social wellbeing.
