The Living Eggs Arrive at Spring Grove Care Home

There’s something rather exciting happening at Spring Grove Care Home in Hampstead. A very special delivery has arrived, and it has already captured the interest of our residents.

Our Living Eggs project is underway, bringing the fascinating process of chicks hatching into the heart of our care home community.

For now, the eggs are safely nestled inside their incubator, and the waiting has begun. Residents are already curious about their new arrivals, wondering when the first signs of life might appear and looking forward to meeting the tiny chicks.

It’s the beginning of a lovely experience, and there’s plenty to look forward to.

A Special Delivery at Spring Grove

The arrival of the Living Eggs has brought a new talking point to Spring Grove.

Inside a specially designed incubator, a collection of eggs is being kept at a carefully controlled temperature as we wait for the chicks to hatch.

The incubator gives residents the opportunity to observe the eggs and follow their progress, turning an everyday space into somewhere to stop, look and wonder.

There’s something particularly captivating about an egg. From the outside, very little appears to be happening, yet inside, a remarkable process may be taking place.

For our residents, it’s an opportunity to experience that sense of anticipation together.

Will the chicks hatch soon? What will they look like? How many will there be?

We’ll have to wait and see!

The Joy of Anticipation

One of the lovely things about the Living Eggs project is that the experience begins long before the first chick appears.

Waiting, watching and wondering are all part of the enjoyment.

Unlike an activity that takes place over a single afternoon, the project gives residents something to follow over several days. They can return to the incubator, see how things are progressing and share their thoughts with other residents and members of the care team.

Encouraging Curiosity and Conversation

At Springdene Care Homes, we believe that curiosity and the enjoyment of new experiences remain important throughout life.

Activities such as the Living Eggs project offer natural opportunities for conversation. Residents might talk about what they expect to happen, ask questions about the hatching process or share experiences of keeping chickens and other animals.

For some, the sight of eggs waiting to hatch may bring back memories of childhood, family life or time spent in the countryside.

For others, it may be an entirely new experience.

Everyone brings their own perspective, and those differences can make the conversations especially interesting.

Meaningful Activities in Care Home Life

When families are considering residential or dementia care, they naturally want to know what everyday life will be like for their loved one.

Alongside good care, comfort and reassurance, opportunities for enjoyment and social interaction are an important part of feeling at home.

At Spring Grove, activities are designed to offer variety and reflect the different interests and preferences of residents.

The Living Eggs project is a good example of how a simple idea can create several opportunities for engagement.

Residents can observe the incubator, enjoy conversations about the eggs and take part in the excitement as the project develops.

There is no pressure to participate in a particular way. Some people may be keen to follow every stage, while others might prefer an occasional look or simply enjoy hearing the latest news.

Supporting Wellbeing Through Shared Experiences

Having something interesting to look forward to can add enjoyment and variety to the daily routine.

Shared activities can also help encourage social connections, particularly when they provide an easy subject for conversation.

For residents living with dementia, familiar subjects, animals and everyday experiences may offer opportunities for engagement and reminiscence. The approach is always individual, recognising that different people respond to different activities.

What matters is creating opportunities that feel welcoming, accessible and enjoyable.

And sometimes, that begins with something as simple as a collection of eggs.

Life Is for Living at Springdene

The Living Eggs project reflects the philosophy we share across Springdene Care Homes: Where Life Is for Living.

Our three North London homes, Spring Grove in Hampstead, Spring Lane in Muswell Hill and Springview in Enfield, are communities where we want residents to feel comfortable, connected and involved in everyday life.

Activities, celebrations and shared experiences are an important part of that approach.

They offer opportunities to maintain interests, discover something new and enjoy the company of others.

At Spring Grove, our latest project is still in its earliest stages, but the excitement has already begun.

And with a little patience, we hope there will soon be some very special new arrivals to introduce!
