There is something truly special about the connection between people and animals.
Residents across all three Springdene Care Homes recently welcomed the wonderful team from Megan’s Petting Paradise, enjoying a memorable afternoon spent meeting rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, a bearded dragon and even a friendly corn snake.
The visit brought smiles, laughter and plenty of conversation to our homes in North London and Enfield, creating meaningful moments that residents, families and staff will remember for a long time.
Bringing Animal Encounters to Every Springdene Home
Megan’s Petting Paradise visited all three Springdene Care Homes:
Residents were able to enjoy an interactive experience with a wonderful variety of friendly animals. While some immediately wanted to cuddle the rabbits and guinea pigs, others were fascinated by the reptiles and enjoyed learning more about them from Megan and her team.
These shared experiences naturally encouraged conversation between residents, relatives and staff, creating opportunities for reminiscence and new friendships.
Supporting Wellbeing Through Animal Experiences
Animal-assisted activities can offer many benefits for older people, particularly those living with dementia.
Interacting with animals has been shown to help reduce anxiety, encourage communication and promote relaxation. Familiar pets often bring back treasured memories, while unusual animals spark curiosity and encourage residents to try something completely new.
Whether cuddling a gentle rabbit, stroking a guinea pig, admiring the bearded dragon or even bravely holding the corn snake, every interaction encouraged confidence, conversation and smiles. It was wonderful to see residents embracing new experiences while others shared happy stories about pets they had loved throughout their lives.
At Springdene, creating these meaningful moments is an important part of our person-centred approach to care.
Every Resident Enjoys Activities in Their Own Way
One of the things that made the visit so special was seeing each resident engage in a way that suited them.
Some happily cuddled the rabbits, while others preferred gently stroking them from the comfort of their chair. A number of residents surprised themselves by confidently holding the corn snake, while others simply enjoyed watching the animals and chatting with friends about the experience.
There was no pressure to participate. Everyone was encouraged to enjoy the afternoon in whatever way felt right for them, helping create a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere throughout all three homes.
These personalised experiences reflect Springdene’s commitment to providing activities that support physical, emotional and social wellbeing.

There was plenty of music, laughter and Irish cheer across the Springdene family this St Patrick’s Day as residents, families and staff came together to celebrate with a wonderful programme of entertainment and activities.
Across our homes in North London and Enfield, the day was filled with memorable moments, from energetic Irish dancing performances to beautiful live piano music, delicious food and even a traditional glass of Guinness for those who fancied one.

At Springdene Care Homes, we believe that special occasions create opportunities to bring people together, celebrate different cultures and create meaningful experiences that enrich everyday life.
Music, Dance and Shared Moments
This year’s celebrations were made extra special thanks to some fantastic performers who brought incredible energy and joy to our homes.
Residents were treated to spectacular displays by The Brooks Academy of Irish Dancing, alongside wonderful performances from talented dancers including Ella Brown. The lively routines quickly had audiences clapping along, smiling and even joining in.
Adding to the atmosphere was beautiful live piano music from Virgilius Vaitkus, whose performances created moments of reflection, reminiscence and connection throughout the day.
Whether watching a champion dancer leap across the floor or quietly listening to familiar melodies, residents found countless reasons to smile.
Bringing Communities Together Across North London and Enfield
At Springdene, celebrations are always about more than the event itself. They are about building friendships, strengthening family connections and creating opportunities for residents to enjoy meaningful experiences together.
Our homes in Hampstead, Muswell Hill and Enfield welcomed the sights and sounds of Ireland, with residents sharing stories, chatting about past celebrations and enjoying the company of friends, relatives and staff.
Many family members joined the festivities, helping to create the warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes Springdene such a special place to live.
Delicious Irish-Inspired Treats
No St Patrick’s Day celebration would be complete without some traditional refreshments.
Residents enjoyed a selection of Irish-inspired food throughout the day, and for those who wished, a perfectly poured glass of Guinness helped mark the occasion in true Irish style.
Simple moments like sharing food and raising a glass together help create lasting memories and reinforce the sense of community that sits at the heart of life at Springdene.
Activities That Support Wellbeing
Music and movement play an important role in supporting emotional wellbeing, confidence and social interaction for older people.
Events like St Patrick’s Day encourage residents to engage with one another, reminisce about happy memories and enjoy the uplifting effects of live entertainment.
At Springdene Care Homes, we are passionate about creating varied and engaging activities that help residents continue enjoying life to the fullest, every single day.

Life Is for Living at Springdene
From Irish dancing and live music to shared laughter and community spirit, this year’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations perfectly captured what life at Springdene is all about.

A joyful Easter celebration across our North London care homes
We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Easter at Springview. The season brought plenty of smiles, colour and shared moments as residents took part in a joyful Easter celebration at our care home in Enfield, joined by festive activities across other Springdene care homes in North London.
Springview is known for creating a warm, welcoming environment where residents can enjoy meaningful activities throughout the year, and Easter is always a special time in our community calendar.
A special visit from the Easter Bunny

One of the highlights of the day was a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny, who made a personal appearance at Springview to spread happiness and laughter among residents. From cheerful waves to gentle chats, the Bunny brought a sense of fun and nostalgia that residents thoroughly enjoyed.
Small Easter gifts were shared, and residents were encouraged to take part at their own pace, whether that meant joining in with the excitement or simply enjoying watching the celebrations unfold from the comfort of our lounge areas.
Interactive activities that bring people together

Easter activities at Springview focused on gentle engagement and shared enjoyment. Residents took part in simple Easter games, including discovering hidden surprises, opening Easter eggs, and enjoying hands-on moments that encouraged conversation and connection.
These activities are carefully chosen by our care team to support wellbeing, mobility and social interaction, reflecting Springdene’s long-standing experience in providing thoughtful residential care across North London.
Celebrating Easter across the Springdene family

While Easter fun was in full swing at our Enfield care home, celebrations also took place at Spring Lane in Muswell Hill and Spring Grove in Hampstead. Sharing seasonal events across our North London care homes helps maintain a sense of connection between residents, staff and families throughout the Springdene group.
Each home celebrates in its own way, but the focus remains the same: creating moments of joy, familiarity and comfort for the people who live with us.
Life at Springview Care Home in Enfield
Springview is part of the Springdene Care Homes group, which has been supporting older people and their families across North London for many years. Our Enfield care home offers residential care in a calm, supportive setting, with a strong emphasis on dignity, companionship and quality of life.

Celebrating 55 Years of Outstanding Care at Springdene
In July 2024, Springdene Care Homes proudly marked 55 years of exceptional care in North London with a vibrant celebration at Springview, our Enfield residential home. The day featured vintage classic cars, a live jazz band, a summer BBQ, and plenty of joy shared with residents, families, and staff.
We’re deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this milestone event so special. Together, we raised over £1,000 in support of Medical Detection Dogs, a charity close to our hearts.
Springdene has been delivering trusted, person-centred care since 1969 and we look forward to many more years of compassionate service.

HOW have you been enjoying this lovely weather? Although it’s not to everyone’s taste, there’s no doubt that a sunny day lifts the spirits, helping erase to memories of the dark days of the Covid pandemic. And what of our residents – how are they coping in what has been quite astonishing heat?
We were asked this question by a TV station this week, and we’re happy to report that everyone is content and well-supported. As you know, all our public areas benefit from air-conditioning. Walks in the gardens – which are in beautiful bloom at the moment – take place at the beginning and end of the day so no-one gets too hot.
During the heat of the day, staff take care to draw the blinds. And there are plenty of cold drinks and delicious ice-cream and lollies. We have a happy group of residents who are enjoying their summer!
However, there is a cloud on the horizon. You cannot fail to be aware of the dire state of the economy, with interest rates rising, inflation at more than 9 per cent and predicted by the Bank of England to rise to 13 per cent next year. According to the Bank, a recession may be imminent.
Here at Springdene we are by no means immune. Our costs are rising exponentially, and our bills are soaring. Here are a few examples of how our bills have risen over the past few months:
- Our insurance premiums have risen by 70 per cent, reflecting the risks identified by Covid.
- Our food costs have doubled. Producing three meals a day from fine-quality ingredients is not cheap. We cannot economise on this, believing well-prepared, nutritious menus are a cornerstone of care home life.
- Our labour costs have risen by 15 per cent, reflecting our payment of the London Living Wage in order to attract the best people. But still recruitment remains difficult in a capital city where living costs are very high.
- Our heating and lighting costs are set to become astronomical. We have been fortunate up till now to be on a fixed-term power contract for heating and lighting, but when it comes to an end, our costs are due to rise by 600 per cent. (Yes, that is correct!). As our CEO Michael Williams observed in a newspaper interview this week, unlike ordinary households, you cannot turn down the thermostat in a care home.
We have tried to mitigate our costs in all sorts of ways, including our directors taking a 25 per cent cut in their salaries. However, we have come to the conclusion that further action needs to be taken.
The consequence is that we are increasing our rates by 10 per cent forthwith and you will receive a letter to this effect next week. While this will not be welcome for many of you, this is only half the average rate of increase imposed by care homes across the country, according to a survey by a major national newspaper this week. See here:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11088411/Care-home-fees-rocket-20-CENT-hammer-blow-middle-class-families.html
We know how much you rate the quality of the care in our luxury homes – your testimonials demonstrate it. We hope you will continue to support us in upholding the highest standards.

On a happier note, we have a lovely story from Springview this week. The husband of one of our residents popped in brandishing a card from The Queen. Eric Arnold had come in to share the news with his wife Mildred that Her Majesty had congratulated them on their 70th wedding anniversary.
Eric, who visits his wife almost every day, shared the story of their life together – which is a period vignette of traditional working-class life in north-east London, now almost vanished.
Mildred and Eric met when they worked together after the war. Mildred was a sample machinist, aged just 17. They married in 1952 when she was 19 at All Hallows Church, Tottenham.
They lived locally with her mother until they saved enough money to buy their first house, in Waltham Abbey. They built up £250 as a deposit and paid £2,225 for the house. They moved several times, ending up in Enfield. Eric worked for 17 years as a skilled craftsman in the local shoe industry, eventually being made redundant because of the rise in cheap Chinese imports. Eric and Mildred had no children.
Eric, who now lives on his own, said he and his wife have been very happily married for 70 years and don’t normally celebrate anniversaries as they both had everything they needed. “But now, thanks to the Queen, we have a cause to celebrate!”
Very happy anniversary, Eric and Mildred!
Just to let you know, by the way, that from now on this newsletter will appear quarterly, but we’re still keen to hear all your news and views: Get in touch at m.williams@springdene.co.uk. Look forward to hearing from you!
