World Chocolate Day at Springdene: Chocolate, Memories and Smiles
There are some flavours that can transport us straight back to another time. A favourite chocolate bar from childhood, a treat bought with pocket money or a familiar wrapper can bring back memories that have not been thought about for years.
That made World Chocolate Day the perfect opportunity for residents at Springdene Care Homes to enjoy much more than a few sweet treats. It became a day filled with conversation, reminiscence, creativity and, of course, plenty of chocolate.
From comparing much-loved chocolate bars to crêpes, cupcake decorating and a flowing chocolate fountain, there was plenty to enjoy.
A Taste of the Past
The celebrations began with a journey through the history of chocolate, followed by a guided tasting of some familiar Cadbury favourites.
Residents sampled different bars, talked about which ones they remembered and shared stories of favourites from years gone by. There was also plenty of friendly debate about which chocolate deserved the top spot.
It is often the simplest things that start the best conversations. A familiar taste, smell or object can prompt memories and stories, giving residents an opportunity to share experiences with the people around them.
For families, these moments can also offer lovely glimpses into parts of a relative’s life they may not have heard about before.
More Than a Chocolate Tasting
World Chocolate Day soon moved from tasting to making and creating.
Residents enjoyed fresh fruit with a flowing chocolate fountain, freshly prepared crêpes and the chance to decorate cupcakes with an impressive selection of toppings.
Having different activities meant people could take part in the way that suited them. Some could get involved with decorating or choosing ingredients, while others could simply enjoy watching what was happening, chatting with friends and sampling the results.
That choice is an important part of life at Springdene. Activities are there to be enjoyed rather than simply completed, with residents encouraged to participate according to their own interests and preferences.
Meaningful Activities and Resident Wellbeing
A chocolate-themed day might sound like simple fun, and there was certainly plenty of that. But activities like these can contribute to several aspects of resident wellbeing.
Reminiscing encourages conversation and gives people opportunities to share their own histories and experiences. Tasting and food-based activities engage the senses, while decorating and choosing toppings can encourage creativity and decision-making.
Just as importantly, getting together around a table creates opportunities for social interaction.
The photographs from the day capture this particularly well. Residents are chatting together, choosing and tasting chocolates, enjoying the chocolate fountain and watching crêpes being prepared. These are relaxed, shared experiences that form an important part of everyday life in a care home.
Creating Moments to Share
At Springdene Care Homes, activities are about creating meaningful moments as much as organising events.
Something as familiar as a chocolate bar can become the starting point for a conversation about childhood, family traditions or a favourite treat. A crêpe station can bring people together around the table. Decorating a cupcake gives someone the freedom to choose exactly what they fancy.
And sometimes the result is simply a big smile and a piece of chocolate.
Those moments matter.
Across Springdene’s care homes in North London, including Spring Lane Care Home in Muswell Hill, Spring Grove Care Home in Hampstead and Springview Care Home in Enfield, the aim is to make daily life sociable, engaging and personal to the people who live there.
World Chocolate Day was a particularly delicious example of that approach.
